The Yuletide season present a multitude of pastimes much better than checking the updates: discovering surprises, getting stuffed on holiday treats, and using meditation skills to not snapping at family members. I hope you succeeded in do all these things and more. However, the entertainment world never sleeps, and this is notably true for the realm of anime. Many exciting developments came out over the holidays, and if you didn't see any, here is a summary of the most exciting bits.
Perhaps the most shocking piece of news, the notorious troubled production that was season 3 of One-Punch Man wasn't enough to halt more episodes. Season 3 will return with a follow-up batch of episodes in 2027—a date so remote they could have dubbed it season 4. More surprisingly, the studio J.C. Staff will remain leading the project. Thankfully this time, director Shinpei Nagai is set to direct from the outset, which is seen as a hopeful indicator. Yet, the key visual for the second cour is the same image the one used for season 3, just with protagonists Saitama and Garou oriented differently. This leads one to believe that, nowadays, they must be trolling the fans.
Kyoto Animation has built a name for being an elite animation studio, distinguishing itself not just for the exceptional quality of its productions but for the ethical practices of its employees—a rarity in the industry. Curiously, until now, it had never worked on an anime based on a manga serialized in Shonen Jump, perhaps the most famous magazine in the industry. Ruri Dragon will end that streak, and what a superb choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo became a huge following when it launched in 2022 after just a small number of issues, but then went into a lengthy break due to the author's health issues. When it returned with a lighter schedule, the series showed it still retained the fans' affection and goodwill, and now fans are overjoyed about the forthcoming KyoAni adaptation.
Kingdom is the top-selling, decades-spanning Shueisha manga that is other than One Piece. If you've are unfamiliar with it before, it's because it only recently got an English localization, but the anime has been airing for some time, and its sixth season was a further outstanding entry. It turns out that was just the initial batch, because a "sequel" has been confirmed as in development, and it will almost certainly premiere in 2026.
One more studio known for the superior craftsmanship of its work, Science Saru has delivered hit shows of the quality of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, most recently, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be handling the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, inspired by the true story of Fatima, an powerful woman and scholar in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. From the trailer, the anime called Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a distinctly fresh and captivating visual style, which is somewhat reminiscent of Ranking of Kings. Scheduled to launch in July 2026, this one will definitely be on my must-watch list.
Right after the airing of episode 24, it was revealed that Tougen Anki will be getting a second season. Based on the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki is based on the manga by Yura Urushibara. The upcoming season of the anime will adapt the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a concrete release date has not been disclosed yet.
