A large-scale rescue and recovery operation is presently under way in the Caribbean region for a duo of lost boats carrying relief goods en route from Mexico to Cuba.
Authorities in Mexico has sent navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying no fewer than nine total personnel, according to a official statement.
The boats had been projected to reach Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the navy said.
Cuba has leaned on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the island struggles through widespread power outages across the country.
"The skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and the two ships are fitted with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," a representative involved in the effort stated.
The nine-person crew are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.
"Our team is working closely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.
Earlier in the week, the Cuban government widely celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had carried 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the country.
That ship, called "a modern Granma" after the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, medicines, baby formula, cycles and foodstuffs.
Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded initiatives to deliver essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since warned of ""critical" supply shortages, with more than fifty thousand operations called off in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Diplomatic measures have been ramped up over the past months, with comments from different officials underscoring the delicate state of bilateral relations.
In response to certain comments, a prominent official from Cuba stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."
Indications suggest that initial phases of discussions commenced, although their current progress remains uncertain.
The Mexican navy stated it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to discover the sailboats and secure the well-being of the people on board.
To date, there has been silence on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
