Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a tense play-off following a topsy-turvy last day of play.
The Englishman sank a crucial birdie putt from just over eight foot to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win over the same opponent.
Rai entered the final round with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.
Fleetwood edged a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last hole.
That led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to claim the championship and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better person. To compete alongside him the last two days was really special,” said Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to describe at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to make up, coming up a stroke short in a shared third place with the Dane, after a stunning 62 closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of leading the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Mansell hit an superb last round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
