During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this charming family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
