A confidential source has disclosed an official investigation that the UK abandoned confidential technology permitting the militant group to locate Afghans that had served with western forces.
The whistleblower, known as Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the security lapse were told to move homes and change their phone numbers to protect themselves from the ruling authorities.
Members of Parliament are looking into official management of a catastrophic leak of personal details concerning approximately 19k individuals who had asked to come to Britain to escape the Taliban.
An electronic document with private information, such as names, contact details and occasionally household data, was mistakenly released by a staff member working at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.
The breach came to light in late 2023, when the names of several individuals who had requested to relocate to Britain surfaced on online platforms.
Many believe there's this misconception that the Taliban lack the same sort of facilities that we have,” Person A informed MPs.

During testimony about whether the Taliban owned sophisticated technology, the whistleblower declared: “They've got everything.”
Initial findings presented to the investigation estimated that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and co-workers of individuals impacted by the leak had been killed.
A gag order concerning the incident was implemented in August 2023 and blocked any information about it from public disclosure until July 2025.
Because she was restricted, Person A and the volunteer organization associated with told affected households they were assisting that they had “suspicions that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.
“We advised that they relocate when possible and altered their mobile numbers. Those were the two main details that, if the Taliban obtained this information, would result in identification and capture,” Person A explained.
The source contested that government assessment conducted by a retired civil servant had been wrong to state that the possession of the information by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change present danger”.
“The thing to remember is that these individuals are not standing up to militant forces; they live secretly. All concerns relate to past work history.”
Person A described disturbing violence experienced by concerned people, including electrocution, interrogation techniques, and violent assaults.
“There are cases of toddlers who have had their arms broken to try to get households to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
