At least 64 individuals were killed in a security raid targeting the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's records.

Four police officers were among those killed during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities reported. Over 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Approximately 2,500 police forces were involved in the security action

Intense confrontations erupted when approximately 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives stated.

The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Mission Consequences

The area of favelas close to Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.

Government representatives confirmed at least 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Dozens of people were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Resident Accounts

Community members have described the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.

Organized Crime Spread

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.

Local law enforcement said over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the operation, together with multiple guns.

Operation Background

The combined action by various security forces was preceded by a extended probe.

Many of the individuals are considered affiliates of a group from the northern region who are currently hiding in the metropolitan area.

Broader Context

Extensive security missions are not uncommon in the South American nation ahead of significant global gatherings in the country.

The international environmental meeting COP30 is scheduled in the city of Belem in the north in late autumn.
