Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 others sustained injuries in an apparently deliberate gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.
The blast was triggered as police and firefighters entered the property near the city of Verona to execute an removal notice for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.
All three deceased individuals served in the Italian military police.
A man and a woman got detained at the scene and one more individual who fled following the explosion was found not long after. All three have been transported to the hospital.
The blast could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area showed the building left as a mass of wreckage.
“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.
The head of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the residence was subject to an eviction order due to debts incurred by the property owners.
Mediators had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the police reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect a family member caused the explosion.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Claudio Papagno stated to the media.
A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion immediately struck our officers,” he added.
Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the minister confirmed.
Those injured by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as three officers of the state police and a firefighter.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.
The official believed the blast had happened on a level above the entrance and stated to journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the incident, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told reporters, mentioning that the trio had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister the Defence Minister joined other elected representatives in honoring the three men who had died in the line of duty.
