The President announced on Wednesday evening that he had endorsed the legislation decisively passed by US legislators that mandates the Department of Justice to make public more records related to the deceased financier, the late child sexual abuser.
This action follows months of resistance from the leader and his backers in the legislature that fractured his core constituency and caused divisions with various established backers.
The president had opposed making public the Epstein files, labeling the issue a "fabrication" and criticizing those who sought to release the files available, even though pledging their release on the election circuit.
Nevertheless he altered his position in the last week after it become clear the House of Representatives would pass the measure. The president stated: "Everything is transparent".
It's not clear what the justice department will release in following the measure – the legislation details a host of various records that must be released, but provides exceptions for some materials.
The measure requires the top justice official to make unclassified Epstein-connected files accessible to the public "in an easily accessible digital format", encompassing each examination into Epstein, his colleague his accomplice, flight logs and movement logs, people referenced or named in connection with his crimes, institutions that were linked to his exploitation or economic systems, protection agreements and additional legal settlements, organizational messages about charging decisions, documentation of his imprisonment and death, and details about any file deletions.
The department will have thirty days to turn over the records. The legislation provides for certain exemptions, encompassing redactions of personal details of victims or private records, any representations of minor exploitation, disclosures that would compromise current examinations or court proceedings and descriptions of demise or mistreatment.
