The child of ex- South African Head of State Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror accusations at the commencement of her court case in the port city of Durban.

Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being charged over remarks she posted on social media four years ago during violent unrest in South Africa that came after the apprehension of her dad.

A week of anarchy in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including looting and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 individuals dead and resulted in damage worth an estimated $2.8 billion (£2.2bn).

She has been alleged of fuelling this turmoil and faces accusations of incitement to commit terror-related activities and public violence.

Background of the Proceedings

The demonstrations were centered in the regions of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the former president's apprehension for disobeying a judicial ruling to testify at an probe into claims of graft while he was in power.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has repeatedly refuted the allegations against her, with her attorney earlier calling the state's case as unsubstantiated.

She has also frequently claimed the allegations against her were an attempt to address political grievances with her father after he established his own party and ran against the African National Congress.

Support and Legal Defense

This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the legal matter was an "power abuse" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and familial targeting" against the ex-leader and his kin.

A handful of supporters from her political organization, the political party, gathered outside the judicial building, while her parent and other group representatives participated in the court sessions inside.

The defense has maintained that the evidence presented by government lawyers is inadequate and lacks compelling proof for a guilty verdict.

Main Aspects of the Case

  • Social media comments from 2019 form the foundation of the state's evidence
  • Fatal demonstrations in 2021 resulted in significant deaths and monetary destruction
  • The defendant confronts multiple allegations of encouragement to unrest
  • Judicial hearings are projected to continue for numerous court sessions

The court case continues as both sides present their cases before the judge in what is expected to be a carefully observed legal battle with significant policy ramifications for South Africa.
