In the past, the England assistant coach featured for Accrington Stanley. Currently, he is focused on helping Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. His journey from player to coach began through volunteering coaching youngsters. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He had found his purpose.
His advancement stands out. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he built a name with creative training and excellent people skills. His roles at clubs took him to elite sides, plus he took on international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the peak as he describes it.
“Everything starts with a dream … However, I hold that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal then you break it down: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. We have to build a methodical process enabling us for optimal success.”
Passion, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours day and night, they both challenge limits. Their methods include mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes the national team spirit and avoids language such as "break".
“It's not time off or a pause,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”
He characterizes himself and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” he states. “We want to conquer the entire field and that’s what we spend most of our time to. We must not only to stay ahead with developments and to lead and create our own ones. It’s a constant process focused on finding solutions. And to clarify complicated matters.
“There are 50 days alongside the squad prior to the World Cup. We must implement an intricate approach for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear in that period. It's about moving it from thought to data to understanding to action.
“To develop a process enabling productivity in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ all the time available from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds among them. We have to spend time communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”
Barry is preparing for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This is the time to build on the team's style, to maintain progress.
“We are both certain that the style of play should represent everything that is good about the Premier League,” he comments. “The fitness, the flexibility, the robustness, the honesty. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive but comfortable to have on. It should feel like a cape and not body armour.
“For it to feel easy, we need to provide a system that lets them to play freely similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and encourages attacking play. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.
“There are emotional wins you can get as a coach in attack and defense – playing out from the back, pressing from the front. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared currently. They can organize – structured defenses. Our aim is to increase tempo in that central area.”
Barry’s hunger for improvement is all-consuming. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, especially as his class contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. For self-improvement, he sought out tough situations he could find to hone his presentations. Including a prison in Liverpool, where he coached prisoners during an exercise.
He earned his license with top honors, and his dissertation – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied numerous set-plays – became a published work. Lampard included won over and he recruited the coach to his team at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.
His replacement at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he brought Barry over from Chelsea to rejoin him. The Football Association see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
