NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, reacting to latest criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had incentivized players for making hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.
Wilson's response came after Payton made remarks after the Broncos' historic comeback win over the New York. Payton suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.
Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the contentious split between the quarterback and his coach.
