Citizens have assembled across the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack saw more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.

"The violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again create a danger to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled official commemorations until 16 October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.

Ceasefire Talks in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' representatives convened in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the proposal.

A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the discussions indicated that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at 7 PM local time.

The official explained the day's discussions concluded without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.

He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet produce any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.

Key Points in Negotiations

  • A permanent halt to fighting
  • The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance deliveries
  • After-conflict management of the territory

Public Feeling

In the city's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling endured the assault on the outdoor event, where hundreds were killed and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location seems like home any longer and until all the hostages are released none of us will feel safe."

"After we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief anew. Then we can start to rebuild," she concluded.

In front of the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Demonstrator a participant stated: "We must do every compromise necessary for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."

Research now consistently show that around the majority of Israelis prefer the hostilities to conclude in return for the release of the captives.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of the gathering, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.

From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli bombardment persisted.

In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone districts and in the eastern district of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.

"As the night arrives, the dread comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli bombing earlier, explained.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my little child who places his face on me the entire evening."

"Every second we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will resume to us."

Medical Crisis

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had received the corpses of half dozen people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of the city reported additional fatalities had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the south region, medics stated.

The territory's health ministry reported a significant number of the {territ
