Inter forward Lautaro Martínez netted a second-half double to secure his side a 2-0 win at Pisa, keeping the away side very much involved in the Serie A championship battle despite a somewhat shaky display.
Under Cristian Chivu, Inter currently are placed third in the table with 27 points total, tied with second-placed Roma and just one point adrift of table-toppers Milan. In contrast, Pisa occupy the 18th spot with 10 points.
Inter traveled in Tuscany aiming to return to winning ways after suffering a loss to rivals by Milan last weekend, followed by a European loss at Atlético Madrid. Nonetheless, they were forced to fight throughout by promoted Pisa. The home team created plenty of opportunities, but a clinical Inter scored the opener in the 69th minute mark when Argentinian Martínez smacked a one-time shot into the roof of the net. The forward then tapped in from close range with seven minutes remaining.
The team’s ability to convert despite pressure proved crucial in securing the victory.
In Spain, the Basque side mounted a thrilling comeback from 2-0 down to equalize at home against Villarreal, only to succumb to a goal five minutes into stoppage time. Villarreal’s goals came from Ayoze Pérez just after the half-hour mark and Alberto Moleiro in the 57th minute, but Carlos Soler quickly pulled one back and Ander Barrenetxea leveled the score three minutes from time. Yet, Moleiro had the last word late in added time.
Later on La Liga match, Real Madrid journey to Girona requiring a win to return to the summit above Barcelona, who secured a 3-1 triumph over Alavés on the previous day.
