A boss of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who proposed the United Kingdom might have reached peak pizza while diversifying the franchise into poultry items has been ousted after tensions with its governing body.
Andrew Rennie is leaving after only 24 months in the top role, and will be succeeded on an temporary basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while the pizza giant looks for a long-term chief.
The outgoing executive, who served at Domino's for more than two decades, had aimed to redirect the UK's largest pizza food delivery firm towards fried chicken, remarking recently there was not “significant expansion” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He said poultry was the fastest-growing food category in the world.
Sources suggest that there was friction between Rennie and the board over his focus and management style, although Domino's official statement said he was stepping down “through mutual consent”.
In September, the chain introduced its Chick 'N' Dip product line – which the former chief described as a “major strategic shift” for the group – and is trialling it in select stores in the north-west of England and the province.
While the business is still going to roll it out across its extensive network in 2026 as scheduled, it regards chicken products as complementary to its main pizza offerings.
Bull, the company chair, stated: “Directors think that there are a range of possibilities to drive further growth and value creation in our primary operations. We are prioritizing selecting the suitable leader to oversee the disciplined execution of that growth strategy.”
Earlier this month, Domino's, which has a substantial customer base in the UK and Ireland, said sales declined by 1.5% in the Q3. In August, it warned that the takeaway market had “intensified” as it blamed economic uncertainty in the run-up to the budget and rising wage costs for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15% drop in six-month income.
Other pizza operators are also facing challenges. Another major chain announced the shutting of multiple locations a last month, after the business behind its UK venues entered insolvency.
Adapting to customer preferences towards balanced diets, Domino's has introduced reduced-calorie options, such as its Thin & Crispy range of bakes below 400 calories as well as plant-based and wheat-free options. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 calories. A big margherita has over 2,100, while a personal has under 1,000 calories.
Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since the recent past, and had a background at the gaming group William Hill. It is understood that she does not want to take on the top job long-term.
She commented: “The company has a several current growth and operational projects that we will be dedicated to implementing at a rapid rate.”
She added these involved ongoing development on the company's procurement system and product development, and its loyalty scheme.
Domino's is also lacking a full-time CFO until 16 March, when Andrea joins from the Irish cider and beer maker C&C Group. Until then, Snow serves as interim finance chief.
