The Canadian Team Cleared of US Claims of Manipulating Bobsleigh Qualifying Race

The Canadian skeleton team have been absolved of charges that they rigged a qualifying event for the Winter Olympics, which allegedly denied competitors from other nations a spot to qualify.

The Core Allegation and Official Inquiry

US skeleton veteran a five-time Olympian alleged the Canadian squad of pulling four of its six competitors from a race in Lake Placid. The allegation was this shrunk the competition, making a lower points pool available. Despite winning the event, Uhlaender failed to earn her qualifying position for the 2026 Olympics.

“Existing federation regulations allow National Federations to withdraw athletes from competition at any time,” declared the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF).

After reviewing the matter, the federation announced it would not impose sanctions, rejecting the allegations as there was no breach of its code.

Canada's Explanation

In response, the Canadian federation stood by the withdrawals, pointing to athlete welfare and the need for recovery. They stated that some athletes had already raced multiple times that week and the move was “appropriate, transparent and in keeping with both athlete welfare and the integrity of the sport.”

Representatives of several affected nations had previously expressed “deep worry” about the selection system's integrity.

The Athlete's Future

The 41-year-old athlete, the Milan-Cortina Games are planned to be her last Games. Her path to qualification remains, the likely US team spots are projected for Kelly Curtis and Mystique Ro. Uhlaender is a former world champion whose best Games result was just off the podium in Sochi 2014.

A Contentious Sporting Climate

The controversy comes during a period of heightened tension in sports between Canada and the US. Recent political rhetoric and tariff impositions have fueled a spirited sporting rivalry. Recent memorable clashes include the 4 Nations Face-off and a thrilling World Series featuring clubs in the neighboring nations.
