The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the production team.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."
The last series concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came recently.
The seventh season will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.
However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."
"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."
The drama launched in the early 2010s and became a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Stephen Graham.
Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.
The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.
However, the network announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
