Arne Slot has revealed that the club's hierarchy agree with his assessment regarding the recent downturn and he refuses to compromise their forward-thinking philosophy in search of a solution. The tactician conceded that six unsuccessful results in seven matches was unacceptable ahead of the weekend fixture with Villa.
Liverpool's coach recognized the pressure was on before his makeshift team suffered Carabao Cup elimination against their Premier League rivals. However, he maintained that this need to reverse the decline is not coming from the Anfield hierarchy or football administration following a summer transfer outlay of almost £450m.
"They say similar things," remarked Slot, whose side will meet Los Blancos in the Champions League and visit Pep Guardiola's side in the English top flight.
Liverpool's manager thinks his team "have an unbelievable squad if they are completely available and fully prepared for the programme we are facing". He said that the transfer window acquisitions in footballers like Florian Wirtz and the Swedish striker, who is likely to miss out again against Villa through fitness issues, had left the club "in an excellent position for the short-term future and the long-term future".
When pressed on why his team were taking so long to gel, he answered: "That's not particularly helpful. 'What are the reasons?' I offer insights and people say I'm offering alibis. I can identify multiple factors why we are not winning as much or suffering defeats as we do but, as I always emphasize, there are insufficient justifications to have a performance streak as we had now."
Only Burnley (21) have faced more big chances from regular play this season than Slot's team (19). The table-toppers, the North London club, have conceded only two. Yet Liverpool's coach rejects the team has been overly exposed and maintains there is no justification to compromise forward-thinking approach for a cautious system after ten fixtures without a clean sheet.
"In my view we're not allowing many opportunities so I don't see a reason to modify our philosophy entirely but we need to do better in keeping clean sheets," he said.
"Versus the Red Devils, how many chances did we concede? Versus the German side when we were ahead by two goals, we scarcely gave up a shot on target. In all the games we have played so far we haven't given up a lot of chances. Not at all. We do allow a somewhat more than last season but that has to do with us being 1-0 down so you become more adventurous. But overall I don't think that our problem is that we concede too many chances. Our issue is we are unable to finish the opportunities we generate."
