The Owls Receive 12-Point Deduction Following Entering Administration

The club's fans described Wednesday as “one of the most bittersweet days in our 158-year history” after the team entered financial administration by owner Dejphon Chansiri and deducted 12 points.

The Owls now face almost certain relegation after the league's punishment left them on -6 points, 15 adrift of safety. Team members and employees experienced delayed wages over recent months, compounding the period of turbulence.

Administrator Begbies Traynor have taken control of the process to sell Wednesday’s assets, along with the team's home ground, to settle outstanding debts including tax liabilities. Soon after the administration announcement, seats spelling out Chansiri were removed in the stadium.

“Administration resulted from prolonged financial issues, a lack of accountability, and unsuccessful sale attempts,” the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust said. “This isn't a moment for celebration. It needn’t have ended this way. But we're relieved the owner has departed.”

Manager’s Perspective For New Beginning

Sheffield Wednesday's coach, Henrik Pedersen met the administrators along with his coaching team, players, and staff early Friday. The Dane said entering administration was necessary for a fresh start.

The manager emphasized “a sad situation can also still be a good day”, adding: “Recent months showed the situation was unsustainable. A reboot is needed to unlock the club's potential. Now optimism and hope for brighter days prevail. I envision a promising future for the club.”

Employee Concerns

Employees expressed emotion at the news, with Pedersen saying: “Uncertainty exists. Will wages be paid? What happens now? Will things improve? Or won't they? The general feeling was that they are all looking forward to the future together with Sheffield Wednesday

Continuing Money Problems

The club's condition worsened significantly in recent months after the former manager and players left due to salary delays. The EFL expressed concern regarding financial health in August.

Since then, the club have been living hand-to-mouth, using any income including league payments to address liabilities. With reports of an imminent winding-up order from HMRC, the owner exhausted alternatives.

Administrator’s Statement

Kris Wigfield, one of three joint-administrators appointed by Begbies Traynor stated: “Similar to other teams, the club sustained heavy losses for several years, previously covered by the owner. Due to increased financial pressure, the owner has chosen to place the club into administration which will enable us to market the club and the stadium as a whole, which is great news for supporters.”

Government Reaction

Government official Lisa Nandy said Wednesday’s plight highlighted again of the need for the independent football regulator, recently legislated. The regulator is expected to be in operation by the 2027-28 campaign.

“Having been in this position with my own team, Wigan Athletic, I know everyone who loves the club will be hoping for a resolution as soon as possible,” Nandy said.

Fan Response

Supporters avoided club shops and products in recent months and thousands stayed away from their home fixture against Middlesbrough as part of ongoing protests. Ahead of the Oxford game, the administrator and the supporters’ trust called on fans to reengage.

“The club’s most urgent need is stability and income, the trust said. The phase of resistance has achieved its goal – now begins the phase of renewal. Every ticket bought, every shirt worn, every pie and pint enjoyed in Hillsborough helps the club rebuild. Meaningful change is possible if we act. It's time to back the team.”

The trust anticipates buyer interest but had been working on a supporter-backed purchase plan guaranteeing “liquidation remains off the table”.
